Q. How could both of you become artists, together?

Anna: We have been drawing together since we were very young. We used so many pieces of paper for drawing since we were in kindergarten. Our teacher in the kindergarten had to give us papers in bad quality because we used up so many of them.

Varvara: We still keep them, drawings from that time. There are many pictures drawn on the back of diagnosis paper from hospitals. We drew flamingo. We always wanted to become painters, all the time. We never questioned ‘what should we become when we grow up?’, I think.

Q. 어떻게 둘 다 아티스트가 될 수 있었나요?

안나: 우리는 어릴 때부터 함께 그림을 그렸어요. 유치원에 다닐 때부터 그림을 그리는데 종이를 많이 썼죠. 하도 종이를 많이 써서 유치원 선생님께서 가장 질이 안 좋은 종이를 주시기까지 했어요.

바바라: 그때의 그림들을 아직도 보관하고 있어요. 그리고 병원에서 받은 진단서 뒷면에 그린 그림도 많아요. 플라밍고를 그렸어요. 우리는 항상 화가가 되고 싶었어요. ‘크면 무엇이 될까?’라는 물음은 던져보지 않았던 것 같아요.

Q. Is there a reason that you mainly focus on drawing nature?

Varvara: We loved nature from our childhood. Because we were born in the Ural region, filled with mountains and lakes. Surrounded by nature, growing up in a small rural town, we’ve watched the beauty of nature. The biggest inspiration always comes from nature, I think. From that wild, wild nature, you know, roadless nature. That’s why we love camping. Many requested painting cities or people but we’d like to paint beauty of nature, animals, particularly. If we were to work on people, we always hope to reveal the relationship between humanity and nature, all the time.

Anna: We especially paint the nature of Russia. But, still, there are many places we haven’t visited yet. A far east area where they say there are tiger and volcanoes. Even Russian people still consider those far places as another country, so we hope to visit there sometime.

Q. 주로 자연물을 그리는 이유가 있나요?

바바라: 어렸을 때부터 자연을 좋아했어요. 우리는 산과 호수가 많은 우랄 지역에서 태어났거든요. 자연에 둘러싸인 시골에서 자라며 자연의 아름다움을 보고 자랐어요. 가장 큰 영감은 언제나 자연으로부터 얻는 것 같아요. 도로조차 없는 야생의 자연에서요. 그래서 캠핑을 좋아해요. 도시나 사람을 그려 달라는 의뢰도 많지만, 자연 특히 동물의 아름다움을 그리고 싶어요. 사람을 그린다면 항상 자연과의 관계를 드러내는 그림을 그리고 싶어요.

안나: 우리는 특히 러시아의 자연을 많이 그려요. 하지만 아직도 가보지 못한 곳이 많죠. 호랑이나 화산이 있다는 극동 쪽이요. 러시아 사람들도 이렇게 먼 지역은 다른 나라처럼 생각하는 것 같아서 꼭 한 번 가보고 싶어요.

Q. Where’s the most memorable place so far?

Anna: Recently, we traveled to the north, including the Kola Peninsula. Landscape and animals there were impressive so we described them in many different paintings. It’s also published as a book. Now, we are working on a new book about Lake Baikal. We traveled 400km in total through hitchhikes and kayaking.

Q. 어디가 가장 기억에 남나요?

안나: 최근에 콜라반도를 포함한 북쪽을 여행했어요. 그곳의 풍경과 동물들이 인상적이라 많은 그림으로 표현했어요. 책으로도 냈고요. 지금은 바이칼 호수에 대한 새로운 책을 준비하고 있어요. 히치하이크도 해보고 카약을 타기도 하면서 총 400 킬로미터를 여행했어요.

Q. What’s the process like? Describing your trip to painting after you finish up all the traveling?

Varvara: First of all, we talk a lot. If we leave together, we talk a lot during the trip but if only one of us went to travel, we share the stories, experiences so that both of us can immerse into it fully. I think we spend about a month to discuss how we would create paintings in which form. So, we can say that traveling is not good enough. Of course, we receive unique impressions from traveling but the tricky part is how to construct them into each piece and develop it further. Taking pictures and gathering information, we create storylines and do the sketch. We don’t have to be in every painting all the time. We sometimes use fictional characters who travel in the painting so that more and more people could enjoy it better.

Anna: Work process varies depending on the concept. If we are thinking about publishing a book, we should decide whether we would include words or not. We sometimes collaborate with other authors for the words that go along with the painting, or we sometimes write poems ourselves.

Q. 여행을 한 뒤 그림으로 표현하는 과정은 어떻게 되나요?

바바라: 우선 이야기를 많이 나누어요. 함께 떠나게 되면 여행 중에도 대화를 나누지만, 만약 한 명만 다녀오게 되면 나머지 한 명이 충분히 빠져들 만큼 재밌게 이야기 전하며 경험을 나누어요. 어떤 형태로 결과물을 만들어 낼지 한 달 가량을 논의하는 것 같아요. 그러니 여행 다녀오는 것만으로는 충분하지 않다고 말할 수 있어요. 분명히 여행을 통해 독특한 인상을 얻지만 그것을 어떻게 구조화하고 발전시키는 것이 아주 어려운 부분이거든요. 사진을 찍고 정보를 모으며 줄거리를 만들고 스케치를 해요. 그림 속에 반드시 우리가 등장하는 것은 아니에요. 여행을 하는 가상의 캐릭터를 등장시키기도 해요. 더 많은 사람들이 재밌게 즐길 수 있도록 말이죠.

안나: 콘셉트에 따라 작업이 많이 달라져요. 책을 만들 경우라면 글을 포함할 것인지, 없어도 되는지 등을 생각해야 하죠. 책에 실릴 글을 위해 다른 작가와 협업하기도 하고, 우리 스스로 시를 쓰기도 해요.

Q. Isn’t it more difficult for sisters to work together?

Varvara: We’ve worked together throughout our lifetime. We went to school together and worked on our graduation exhibition together as well.

Anna: Since Varvara is left-handed while I use the right hand mainly, we sometimes work on a single piece of work at the same time. We tried that for fun a couple of times but everyone told us that we shouldn’t do it.

Varvara: I like it that there’s another person with a new perspective on my work when we work together. If I draw, Anna gives me feedback on what to change and what looks better. When repeating the same work over and over again, one of us tends to become blind in some aspects, not knowing what to do next. Then, we help out each other, which makes our work faster and simpler.

Anna: Varvara’s painting has structure but sometimes feels so hard. Mine feels much freer but sometimes it seems lacking. But when we work together, we tend to achieve great outcomes. It’s like left and right hands are used together.

Q. 자매가 함께 일하는 것이 더 어렵진 않나요?

바바라: 우린 항상 함께 일했어요. 학교도 함께 다녔고 졸업작품도 함께 만들었죠.

안나: 바바라가 왼손잡이, 나는 오른손잡이라 둘이 동시에 하나의 그림을 완성하기도 해요. 재미 삼아 몇 번 그렇게 그려보았는데 다들 그렇게 하면 안 된다고 말했죠.

바바라: 함께 작업을 하면 새로운 시선으로 봐주는 사람이 있어서 좋아요. 내가 그림을 그리면 안나는 무엇을 바꾸면 좋을지, 어떤 게 더 좋아 보이는지 피드백을 줘요. 오랫동안 같은 일을 반복하다 보면 눈에 띄지 않는 것이 생기고 어떻게 해야 좋을지 모를 때가 있잖아요. 그럴 땐 상대방이 도와줘요. 그러면 작업이 더 빨라지고 간단해지죠.

안나: 바바라의 그림은 구성이 있지만 딱딱하게 느껴질 때가 있고 내 그림은 좀 더 자유로운 편이지만 부족해 보일 때가 있어요. 하지만 둘이 함께 그리면 좋은 결과물이 나와요. 왼손과 오른손이 함께 그린 것처럼 말이죠.

Q. What would you like to describe through paintings?

Varvara: I’d like to find new and special details from nature. At the same time, I’d like to show the current state of Russia. For instance, about the Kola peninsula mentioned earlier, I’d like to show what it looks like in that fishing village, what fishers do and where they live as well as the nature surrounding their lives. While we are working on a book about Baikal, we express some significant environmental issues like pollution in Lake Baikal. Nature in Baikal is not an abstract place covered with ice, just like the pretty place in a photo.

Anna: Painting is an outstanding opportunity to deliver experiences. However, arts should be more than just talking words. Listeners should be able to empathize with that arts. I’d like to present a story through each painting well so that others would empathize with the story in it.

Q. 그림을 통해 어떤 것을 표현하고 싶나요?

바바라: 새롭고 특별한 자연의 디테일을 찾고 싶어요. 그러면서도 러시아의 현재 상태를 보여주고 싶습니다. 아까 언급한 콜라반도를 예로 들자면, 그곳 어촌 마을은 어떤 모습인지, 어부들은 어떤 집에 살며 무엇을 하는지, 그들을 둘러싼 자연과 함께 보여주는 것이죠. 바이칼에 대해 책을 준비하고 있는 요즘, 바이칼 호수의 오염처럼, 중요한 환경 문제도 함께 표현해요. 바이칼의 자연이란 사진에서처럼 예쁜 얼음이 덮이기만 한 추상적인 곳이 아니에요.

안나: 그림은 경험을 전달할 수 있는 좋은 기회예요. 하지만 예술이란 그냥 말하기만 해서는 안 된다고 생각해요. 듣는 사람들이 공감할 수 있어야 하죠. 그림을 통해서 하고 싶은 이야기를 남들이 공감할 수 있도록 잘 전달하고 싶어요.

Q. What’s your future plan?

Anna: We are planning to visit somewhere unfamiliar, again, another place. Working on paintings about Africa, we are reading some books and learning new things. We’ve never been to Africa, so we’re looking forward to traveling there.

Varvara: Currently, we are reading a book by zoologist, Bernhard Grzimek. From his book, we could learn new things that we had never known about Africa like there are not many animals living in Africa actually but only in a few national parks. Since we’ve never thought about this issue before, it feels really unfamiliar and interesting.

Q. 앞으로의 계획이 있다면요?

안나: 또 다른 낯선 곳을 찾아갈 예정이에요. 아프리카에 대한 그림을 준비하면서 책을 읽고 새로운 것을 알아가고 있어요. 아프리카에는 한 번도 가본 적이 없는데 하루빨리 가보고 싶어요.

바바라: 지금은 동물학자 베른하르트 그르지멕의 책을 읽고 있어요. 그의 책을 통해 아프리카에 대해 전에 알지 못했던 것들을 많이 알아가고 있어요. 실제 아프리카에는 동물들이 많지 않으며 국립공원에만 남아 있다는 문제 같은 것들이요. 이런 생각을 해본 적이 없어서 낯설면서도 재밌게 느껴져요.
