용기에 관하여
누군가의 삶에 대해 이야기하며 용기라는 단어를 사용할 때, 우리는 뭔가 대단한 일화가 필요한 것처럼 느끼곤 한다. 두려움 없이 상황에 맞선 경험이나 무언가를 포기해가며 결단을 내린 순간들만이 용기를 설명할 자격을 얻는 것만 같다. 물론 용기가 불가능을 가능하게 만드는 엄청난 능력이라는 점은 틀림이 없으나, 그것이 드러나기 위해서는 반드시 굉장한 사건과 연관되어야만 하는 것일까? 우리는 고된 상황을 그저 견디는 데에도 상당한 용기가 필요하다는 것을 잘 알고 있다. 막연한 불안감을 그대로 디디고 선 채로 변화에 적응하는 것에도 크나큰 용기가 필요하다.
캘리그래퍼로서 그리고 캘리드로잉을 하는 아티스트로서 하트몬드 공병각은 스스로에게 무거운 질문을 계속해서 던진다. 또한 그럴 때마다 자신의 삶에 대한 불안함과 두려움을 느끼고 또 느낀다. 하지만 그는 거대한 불안의 파도가 조금이라도 잦아들길 기다리며 견디고 버틸 뿐만 아니라 자신만의 작품을 이어가고 있다. 하트몬드 공병각은 스스로를 끝내 용기와 어울리지 않는 사람이라고 설명했지만, 그토록 일상적인 두려움과 불안을 끌어안고서도 새로운 상황을 실험하고 자신을 표현한다는 것은 용기가 아닌 단어로 설명하기 어렵다는 생각이다.
About Courage
When we pick the word ‘courage’ to talk about someone else’s life, we feel inclined to have to have something exceptional. It seems like that experiences facing the reality fearlessly or moments where decisions are made in exchange of something great only deserves to be described to be ‘courageous’. Of course, it is clear that courage is an outstanding quality that makes impossible possible but does it really have to be connected to something unimaginable event for it to show? Is it really mandatory? We all know that a significant amount of courage is needed in order to simply stay still throughout a difficult time. Adapting to changes while standing still above that unreasonable anxiety takes immense courage.
Heartmond Kong Byung Gak as a Cali-drawing artist or Calligrapher continues to question himself; difficult, heavy ones. Every time he gets questioned, he experiences that instability and fear about himself, again and again. However, he waits silently, stays still for that huge waves of anxiety to go down, furthermore he continues to work on his own work. Heartmond Kong Byung Gak explained himself that he’s not really right to go with ‘courage’ but I think it is not possible to find any other vocabulary to describe him – the one who holds the fear and anxiety within himself while experimenting new condition and expressing himself creatively.
